Traffic monitoring is significant to management and maintenance of highway system.A novel cement-based piezoelectric sensor which can respond to impact loading caused by moving vehicles has been developed recently. This type of sensor is durable
inexpensive and can work under any weather conditions. In this paper
the application of the sensor to traffic monitoring is proposed.Fabrication and performance of the sensor was presented. Also
the experiments on the performance of a concrete beam with two embedded piezoelectric sensors
as a sensing element installed under road
is carried out. From the results of tests
it has been seen that the sensor can response correctly to the impact load and the performance of the sensor does not change before and after the sensors were embedded into the concrete beam
which indicates that the sensor has a good potential to be used in traffic monitoring.
