The context under which the performance-based building fire safety code emerged and the deve-（lopment status） of it are presented.Based on the conclusion of experience from other countries

several problems to be considered in moving toward performance-based fire safety codes are addressed

in terms of the qualification of the level of building fire safety

uncertainty in performance-based design

verification of the performance-based design

documentation of performance-based design

and the continuity between design

construction and use.With regard to the condition in our country

it is pointed out that the problems needed to be solved in the process of developing performance-based fire safety code: the relationship between performance-based code and prescriptive code must be treated correctly;the research and development of fire protection products must be promoted positively;the source of funds must be resolved and engineering practice or design guidance should be established

etc.
