Xide county is situated in the mid-west of Xichang basin with geo-hazards frequently occurring as a result of complex geological structures

frequent earthquakes and highly fractured rock stratum. The landform in this area is steep with a high relief and the climate belongs to the monsoon type with frequent and severe rainstorms. All these consist in the intrinsic factors leading to debris flows. Moreover

the irrational human economic and engineering activities are destroying the ecological balance and aggravating the severity of debris flows. On the basis of analysis of its formation

this paper presents illustrations of the potential hazards posed by the debris flows in Xide county and propose corresponding control measures to mitigate the hazards.
