Two kinds of novel distributed fiber optic sensing technique
i.e.
Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) and Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (BOTDR)
are introduced in this paper. The two distributed fiber optic sensing systems based on FBG and BOTDR were implemented on a simple supported reinforced concrete beam and a continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP)
respectively. The dynamic and static strains at the upper side of the beam was real-time monitored. In another experiment
the strain of the steel and concrete in the CRCP was also detected on-line. The experimental results show that the FBG and BOTDR technologies are able to find wide applications to structural health monitoring.
