The mechanics of earthquake-induced foundation settlement for multi-storied building is briefly discussed and simplified method for calculating the earthquake-induced foundation settlement is presented in this paper. Based on this simplified method
the effects of foundation pressure
ground motion intensity
embedded depth
dimension and types of foundation on earthquake-induced foundation settlement are analyzed. It is concluded from these analyses that: ①with the increase of foundation pressure
or embedded depth of foundation or ground motion intensity
the earthquake-induced foundation settlements is increased. ②For some buildings and grounds
the seismic settlement may increase quickly when the peak value acceleration of ground motion come to a critical value. ③For raft foundations with the same width
the seismic settlement may reduce with the decrease length of foundation. But
for raft foundations whose length is the same
the seismic settlement may increases with the widening of foundation. ④Under the same condition
the earthquake-induced foundation settlement of multi-storied building on strip foundation is far greater than that of the same structure on raft foundation
and the earthquake-induced foundation settlement of multi-storied building is least with width of strip foundation of 1.2 m.
