In August 1997

ground cracks appeared in succession in Huzhuang township of Puyang county. Researches have been carried out to find out that the ground cracks were caused by water table drops

but no by nectonic activities

and nonuniform settlement of soils at shallow depths. In the next several years

ground cracks took place in Liutun township of Puyang country too

which verifes this view. This study provides an example for investigating ground cracks due to arid in large areas in Pyuang country

and is useful to distinguish whether ground cracks are formed tectonicly. It is also of value in construction plan and housing ground improvement.
